The Tunxis Recycling Operating Committee (TROC) established an all time record for recyclables by collecting over 20,000 tons during 2011, and for December 2011, the region established another all-time record for recyclables collected – over 2,000 tons for the month! This follows exceptional results for November (the 3rd highest on record).
Single stream recycling, which does not require the separation of acceptable recyclable materials (all acceptable materials in one container) is now provided throughout the region. Acceptable materials include newspaper, cardboard, phone books, magazines, catalogues, office paper, “junk mail”, envelopes (without Tyvek® or heavy plastic coatings), clean food and beverage containers (glass, metal and plastics #1 - #7), and empty plastic bottles used for consumer products (no lids or caps).
Residents often have questions about what can be recycled, and there are many different types of plastic containers and lids which people find confusing when trying to recycle properly. TROC advises that everyone recycle, and that proper recycling benefits the environment as well as saving tax dollars. Improper recycling results from the wrong items being placed in the recycling bin, which can lead to damaged equipment at the processing facility (located in Berlin and operated by Murphy Road Recycling). Items which should not be put in the recycling bin include appliances, metal fixtures, dishware, sharps (such as razors or syringes), plastic bags and any glass items not used for food or beverages.
